- <H3> TEAM JOBIE The Team Jobie Leukemia Research Fund has been established at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute by the Kaufman family in order to further research in leukemia, including acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), and to advance the search for a cure for all cancers. Contributions can be made directly to this fund, as named above. These should be sent to: Suzanne Fountain Director, The Jimmy Fund 10 Brookline Place West Brookline, MA 02445 Contributors should indicate that the gift be directed to this fund and, if desired, name any parties that should be informed of the contribution. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will follow up with a written acknowledgment of the gift, which is deductible for federal income, gift, and estate tax purposes. A word from Andy & the children, Alex, Justin and Emily: We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported Jobie and our family during this most difficult time. To those who gave blood and platelets, it was so comforting to Jobie to know blood was from friends who loved and cared for her. It was a special feeling that can not be described in words. But it was heart warming. I need to say on behalf of Jobie, myself and my children, we really love each and everyone of you. The outpouring of love and support for our family is quite overwhelming and is a beautiful tribute to the feelings you shared toward Jobie. Jobie wanted so very much to have the opportunity to hug and thank all of you in person for everything you have done during her battle with leukemia. Jobie always remained positive and focused to stay alive and be a winning statistic. All Jobie wanted to do was to come home and be with her children. To take a simple walk around the community or just have the opportunity to be back in her own home. Jobie never lost hope for one single minute. I am so glad Alex, Justin and Emily got to see and hug their Mom on the most special Mother's Day ever on May 9th. In pure Jobie fashion, she looked absolutely perfect, even after 2 rounds of Chemotherapy. The children were delighted to see Mom looking exactly like Mom - What a special, bitter-sweet day that was. I would like to leave you with these thoughts to help all of you live a happier and more fulfilling life...and these are not just words, but facts. Every day you wake up is a good day...Every breath of air you take is a gift, enjoy every second of that fragile gift, for unexpectantly, in a blink of an eye, it can be taken away from you. Please don't ever forget these words. On behalf of Jobie and my entire family, we love all of you, and wish you good health and a lifetime of happiness. With all our love, Andy, Alex, Justin and Emily and our entire family. LOCAL NEWS Local woman leaves behind legacy Published Friday, May 21, 2004by Heather Johnson SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Jobie Levine, pictured here with her three children, Alex, Emily, and Justin, and her husband Andy touched the lives of many, including complete strangers. To all those who knew her, Jobie Levine was a loving mom, a caring friend and a devoted wife. She was the type of person who after being diagnosed on April 9 with acute myelogenous leukemia, still wanted to support her good friend Allie Rubin (who has lupus) by walking as a member of Allies team at the Walk With Us To Cure Lupus Walkathon on April 25. Although Jobie was too sick physically to be there, she was able to be there for her friend in spirit. Jobie passed away Wednesday afternoon after a courageous six-week battle with AML. In her brief 40 years here on earth, she touched so many lives in so many ways. Even complete strangers. She touched a community like no one has ever touched a community before, Jobies brother-in-law Larry Levine said. Strangers were coming out in droves from all over Florida donating platelets and their blood. A healthy and active mother-of-three, Jobie volunteered at each of her childrens schools. She was on the preschool board at the Congregation Bnai Israel on Yamato Road, and she helped her husband Andy out with their family insurance brokerage business. Jobie was tremendously devoted to her children. She would carpool three separate children to three separate schools by herself everyday, Larry stated. Her younger sister, Samara Kaufman, flew all the way from Boston repeatedly when she found out Jobie was sick. And yet she cant get over how much her sister still remained actively involved in her childrens lives while immobilized in her hospital bed. She would sit in the hospital room organizing her childrens play dates and activities, and helping her son Alex with his homework over the phone. Five people have tried to step into her shoes to do her job and they couldnt, Kaufman, 37, remarked. It was after her family skiing trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, when Jobie started feeling exhausted and complained of sores in her mouth. At first she thought she had mono. But after tests came back negative, Jobie was told her blood work showed some abnormal cells and that she needed to receive a bone marrow biopsy. After that everything started happening quickly. Although her blood tests were pending, she still had 30 people over to her house to celebrate Passover. Just a few days later she was at Jackson Memorial Hospital receiving chemotherapy. Andy, her husband of 15 years, remained by her side in the hospital for five-and-a-half weeks. He even slept on a chair in her room because he wanted to be there to keep her spirits up the whole time. Unfortunately, her three children Alex, 10, Justin, 8, and Emily, 4, -- only got to see their mother three times since being hospitalized. The last time they saw her was on Mothers Day. Jobies closest friends started a Web site for friends and family members around the world who wanted to keep up to date with news on her. For those who wanted to get a message to her, a Well Wishes page was created so that they could post their messages. One page eventually turned into 10. Long-time friend Liz Dinner was the Team Jobie leader. Dinner and other friends, including Dr. Gary Hindin and his wife Lisa, have donated the last six weeks of their lives running blood drives, finding help for the kids and updating the Web site daily. Jobie Levines funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. today at Congregation Bnai Israel. Afterwards will be a private burial attended by her close family. The family will be sitting shiva on Saturday evening and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the home of Larry and Audrey Levine. Jobie did post a message to all those who have supported her and her family throughout this whole ordeal. "There are no words to express how deeply touched and overwhelmed I am by the tremendous amount of love support from my family and friends. Your prayers, kind thoughts and positive energy are giving me the strength I need to fight this battle. It is so comforting for me to know that my family is surrounded by your love and care at this difficult time. Please know how grateful and appreciative I am. I cannot begin to express my deep appreciation to you, but look forward to telling each one of you personally." And one day, she will be able to.
